Eligibility
Have a low ferritin level and other supporting blood work results (or other approved indication for iron infusion).
Pathway 1: Clients WITH a referral from their own provider
(GP, NP, specialist, or community practitioner using our referral form)
- Your provider must submit a referral using our clinic referral form.
- Wait approximately 2 business days after submission before booking your infusion.
- This allows time for our team to receive, review, and upload the referral.
- Once confirmed, book your iron infusion directly with one of our nurses.
Important notes for this pathway:
- You do not need to see our physician.
- You do not need to complete blood work through our clinic if your referral includes adequate and current labs (done within 3 months of the infusion).
- If labs are incomplete or outdated, our team will contact you.
Pathway 2: Clients WITHOUT a referral (or referral not meeting requirements)
All clients without an acceptable external referral must complete the following steps:
- Book a free 10-minute virtual appointment with Dr. Nicholas Majaesic.
- He will review your previous lab work via Netcare and order additional blood work if required.
- Your virtual link will be emailed via the Jane App approximately 30 minutes before your appointment. Please check your Junk folder if you don’t see it.
- Print your lab requisition and attend your local lab for blood work (if required).
- Book a follow-up virtual appointment with Dr. Majaesic to review your results.
- If approved, book your iron infusion with one of our nurses.
Infusion & Billing Information (All Clients)
- Your iron medication is directly billed to your personal drug insurance (if you have one) through our clinic pharmacy.
- If there is a balance not covered, a pharmacy receipt will be provided at your appointment:
- This receipt can be used for reimbursement and medical expense tax claims.
- The nurse will bring the iron medication to your appointment.
- Administration fee: $200
- Billed separately from any medication cost not covered by insurance.
- Appointment length: Approximately 1 hour.
Timing Notes
- If lab work is already current (within 3 months) and acceptable, steps related to blood work may be skipped.
- Many clients can receive their infusion within 3–7 days of meeting with Dr. Majaesic (or sooner if an external referral is complete).

Frequently Asked Questions for Iron Infusion
Clinically, hemoglobin typically begins to rise within 1–2 weeks post-infusion, but a meaningful increase is often seen by 3–4 weeks, assuming ongoing losses are controlled and there’s no other cause of anemia.
Symptom improvement (fatigue, shortness of breath, cognitive fog) can occur within a few days to 1–2 weeks, though this varies from patient to patient
- An iron infusion is done using Monoferric Iron and given through an IV in your arm
- Indicated when oral iron is ineffective, poorly tolerated, or too slow
- Iron is taken up by macrophages and hepatocytes, then gradually transferred to transferrin.
- Iron stores (ferritin) increase first, followed by incorporation into erythropoiesis.
- After an iron infusion, your body starts absorbing the iron and storing it, mainly in the liver and immune cells. These stores act like a backup supply. Once your iron stores are filled up, your body begins using the iron to make new red blood cells.
Not necessarily "serious," but it indicates:
- Significant iron deficiency not responding to or not suitable for oral therapy
- A need to address the underlying cause -is it heavy/long menses, haemorrhoids, undiagnosed Celiac (malabsorption) disease
Generally safe when proper protocols are followed. Serious adverse effects are rare:
- <1% risk of anaphylaxis when using Monoferric Iron
- Infusion reactions (e.g., flushing, nausea, back pain) occur in <5% and are usually mild and go away when the infusion is complete
Therapeutic effect: May last months to years, depending on iron loss and stores.
There’s no absolute threshold, but commonly considered when:
- Ferritin <20 ng/mL (absolute IDA)
- Ferritin 30–100 ng/mL with TSAT <20% (functional deficiency)
- If you do not fall within these ranges, it may still be worth doing a complimentary consult with our physician for consideration
Ferric derisomaltose (Monoferric): For doses of 500-1000mg: Approx 30 minutes to infuse and 15 minutes for a follow up mini Saline bag to infuse. The nurse is usually at your home for 1 hour.
For doses of 1000mg+ the appointment is about 1.5 hours
The average cost in Sherwood Park is $200-$230 per infusion not including medication and these clinics often have a waitlist of 4 - 6 weeks.

We understand that it is not easy to be approved to get your infusion through Alberta Health which is why we keep our Iron Infusion affordable and can get you infused usually within 1 week of approval from our physician

- All medication is direct billed by our pharmacy to your personal drug plan, if there is anything left owing, the nurse is reimbursed at your appointment
- The Cost to infuse the Iron at Poke Beauty is $200; separate from medication fees listed above
